How to use Swap GIF Background

  1. Choose your source file, then either describe what to keep in a word or two, or click on a subject in the preview. A description keeps every matching subject at once; clicking lets you pick exact subjects and add a separate object for each one.
  2. Select Preview cutout. Review the result; add keep or exclude points to refine the selection and run it again if needed.
  3. Choose a replacement background, review the preview, and download your result.

Segmentation follows your first-frame selection through every GIF frame. Source files must fit the 100 MB upload limit and available memory; there is no fixed frame-count cap. Long animations take longer to process. Selection quality varies, particularly around hair, fine detail and fast motion.

Frequently asked questions

Should I describe my subject or click it?
Either works. A short description such as person or dog keeps every match in one pass, which is quickest when you want all of something. Clicking lets you pick exact subjects and refine each one with keep and exclude points, which is better when several similar things are visible and you want only some of them. Filling in a description turns off the click controls for that run.
How do I choose more than one object?
Click a keep point on your subject. Use Add another subject before selecting a separate subject. Add more keep points or exclude points to refine each object, then run segmentation again.
Are my files uploaded?
Only when you select Preview cutout, your source file and selection points are uploaded to private storage and processed by SAM 3 on Modal. Replacement backgrounds and final exports stay in your browser. Working files are deleted after completion or cancellation when possible, with automatic storage expiry after one day.
Can I change the background without running AI again?
Yes. Once the masks are ready, background colors and replacement files are composed locally. Only changing the object selection requires another segmentation run.
Is there a frame limit?
There is no fixed frame-count limit and frames are not sampled or silently dropped. The 100 MB limit is for the compressed file. GIF frames are decoded as needed instead of keeping the whole animation in memory. Very large dimensions, replacement backgrounds, masks or exported files can still exceed memory limits. Long jobs can run for up to one hour and may fail if device or server memory is exhausted.
How are animation and transparency handled?
Removal preserves frame timing and loop settings. Replacement GIF backgrounds repeat over one source cycle, with output frames added at background changes. GIF supports hard transparent edges rather than partial transparency. Zero-delay frames use a 100 ms fallback when combining two animations.
Will every selection be perfect?
No. Inspect the result and refine the points if needed. Subjects must be visible in the first frame. Fine hair, transparent materials, fast motion and hidden objects are difficult. Mask processing uses a maximum 1024-pixel side and binary edges; exports retain source dimensions.
